Around one per cent children born in the UAE have been diagnosed with congenital heart diseases, according to the results of screening carried out on the newborn. The International figure is about 8 per 1000live babies and 20 per 1000 Still Births.
Nearly half of the babies with CHD have ‘critical’ lesions which require medical or surgical intervention in the first week after they are born. If these lesions are not detected early, there is a significant risk of death or bad neuro-developmental outcome.
Fetal echocardiography (heart ultrasound for babies in the womb), can detect the congenital heart disease in utero, even before the baby is born .Fetal Echocardiography uses various vieWs to look for the heart chambers and valves etc and can look for Ventricular septal defect, Atrial Septal Defect, Tetrology of Fallot and various congenital Heart Diseases.
